The 25, 50, or 100-Ton Master Captain’s License expands the types of commercial vessels you may operate. A Master credential may allow you to serve as captain aboard USCG-inspected passenger vessels carrying more than six passengers, such as tour boats, passenger ferries, and head boats, as well as qualifying uninspected vessels.

Based on your documented sea service and the tonnage of the vessels on which you gained your experience, your Master credential may be issued at the 25-, 50-, or 100-Gross-Ton level, along with applicable route limitations.

Additional Requirements

  • Obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Be at least 19 years old
  • Meet applicable U.S. citizenship requirements
  • Pass a USCG physical examination
  • Pass a DOT-approved drug test
  • Complete Adult CPR and Basic First Aid training
  • Complete the USCG-approved 25/50/100-Ton Master course and pass the required examinations
  • Complete and submit a USCG Original Merchant Mariner Credential application package

No additional testing at a USCG Regional Examination Center is required. All required course examinations are administered right in class.
